Silence is Skillful…We’re just Unskilled

Silence has a bad reputation. It’s often misunderstood as passiveness, avoidance, or disconnection. Or it’s portrayed as a threatening void, full of lurking danger. So we’ve learned to fear it and fill it.

But silence can be a refuge when we know how to access it.

The good news is, it’s trainable.
It’s not a magical state that visits randomly. If you’ve felt the peace of silence once but haven’t been able to return to it, you may have assumed it was a fluke. But it’s not. It simply requires training to regularly access.

This is the kind of training that’s opposite to our cultural obsession with excellence, but beautifully complementary to it. It teaches:

  • Intentional ease around necessary tension

  • The natural and radiant warmth of compassion that creates allows us to feel part of a whole

  • A willful surrender of obsession with the past and future, anchored in simple presence

And while this might sound abstract or “woo-woo,” it’s grounded in neuroscience. In the fact that our brains can change through our deliberate internal actions.

The book Silence is Skillful provides the conceptual grounding for everything on this site. It explores the psychological and relational consequences of constant noise, speed, and emotional reactivity, and offers a framework for responding with greater clarity and restraint.

Rather than positioning silence as withdrawal, the book reframes it as a skill: one that supports ethical action, relational stability, and a more coherent sense of self.

Skillful Silence Cohort

A year-long mindfulness program that supports the integration of silence into daily life through monthly one-on-one sessions, group calls, and a simple guided curriculum.

Welcome! I’m Kerry, a licensed clinical counselor, certified mindfulness and yoga teacher, and full-time stepmom navigating the beauty and complexity of life.

My work is rooted in both professional expertise and lived experience. While studying biochemistry in college, I found myself overwhelmed by stress and anxiety, and it was mindfulness that helped step out of that cycle. That practice became the turning point. It led me to yoga, to deeper inquiry, and eventually to the path of clinical mental health counseling.

Today, I use these same tools every day. Not just in my work, but in my life. They don’t make me perfect. They don’t remove the difficulty. But they do give me a steady place to act from, and that makes a big difference in a way that’s made a big difference.

I created Silence is Skillful to identify the natural overlap between these wisdom practices and the current world of mental healing. These practices offer:

  • A way to honor emotion without getting lost in it.

  • A framework for understanding self in a way that is flexible and grounded.

  • A tool set to navigating relationships with sustainable compassion.

  • And a way to feel whole while imperfectly pursuing excellence.
